Huh? Pot For A Deshojo?

I'm new to this forum. I'm really impressed though, lots of interesting things to read through. I've been training "bonsai" for about 5 years now, here is an Acer Palmatum Deshojo (Japanese Maple) of mine. It needs repotting in spring and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Does anyone have any experience of thread or approach grafting Deshojo?

Thanks for reading,

Mark

Mark,

Welcome to BonsaiTalk. You're right, lots of great stuff here.

That is an amazing tree, beautiful colour. I think it looks ok in the current pot, but seeing as you're asking for opinions, here's mine...

I would suggest a shallow oval-ish pot, if the rootmass will reduce. Something like the pot here, in my competition virtual, only a more cream colour

Regards,

TB

The deep color is a characteristic of the Deshojo's spring color, this year I was lucky enough to hold onto the colour into mid summer, they need full sun, in shade they turn green. Thanks for your suggestion TB. I fancy a glazed pot, I am looking for a cream too, although I have a green Bryan Albright pot which is rectangular with rounded corners.

Mark:

What an absolutely magnificent tree! What are the dimensions? (i.e. height, width, girth)

Thank you erubeck!

Without venturing out into the pooring rain, I'd say it was 20 inches high, the trunk diameter is about 2 inches above the roots, flaring to about 4 at the surface. The pot is a problem though, it's too deep for this tree, colour isn't too bad though.

I think it would look good in a pot similar to these:

Of course that just one man's opinion.

Yup! That second one's what I had in mind Gary. Thanks for posting.

Something like this? I think it needs to be 10% smaller.
