Poor little guy didn't see that coming.

I have had my eye open for an inexspensive Hinoki Cypress to style and better learn it's habits. I got this one from a box store today for 12.99. He turned out better than I thought he might at just 6 1/2 inches tall from the soil. Sure was a good time for me!

It's my understanding that the CHAMAECYPARIS species can handle hard pruning in either the spring or fall.

In a private message from one of our more knowledgeable members it was suggested that I add some movement to the lower left-hand branch and bring the foliage in closer to the trunk. Filling in the gap and detracting from the borderline slingshot appearance. Excellent points. I think I will wait until fall, when there is less sap flow, to wire. This tree has been through enough for one season.
No plans for more elmboy. I need to work on improving the quality of my trees and not the quantity. But! I find the exercise of extracting a Bonsai from a garden center shrub to be so exhilarating that I just had to have a fix!

Wow Pat! I love the pics... I have to do that next time. lol Cracked me up to see all the debris. Very good job on the initial style, I like what you left.

Ah yes... the dreaded sling shot... you were given excellent advice on that thought.

Yours most kindly,

lol, Victrinia, looks like he pruned away the $12 and left the 99 cents. But a lovely little tree at the end of the process. Well done!

Another thought on it is to remove the lower left branch getting rid of the slingshot at the same time. That would give the trunk some movement to the right.

Nice little tree to work with, good luck,...Hec
