Ponderosa on the Rocks

Sunday, May 7th, bonsaiTALKer BrianBay9 brought his sumo sized pyracantha for some carving. Since he was starting his move to Southern California the next day, he lightened the load by giving me several rocks.
I'm posting the largest one which measures about 26 inches across, is very craggy with planting pockets and has natural drainage. The first image shows the rock.
Today I decided to install this old Ponderosa pine onto the rock.
Brian, thanks again for the rocks.

Mike

Jeremy, I don't know where it came from, but it must be lava flow. Maybe Brian can shed some light on this question.

Wonderful Mike! I knew you'd make more of it than I ever would. Sorry, can't add much to the geology. If I recall correctly, I picked it up, along with its mate, at a flea market. Sorry for my ignorance.

Mike,
This looks like "Lace Rock" which they sell at larger aquarium stores. I used to get boxes of larger pieces from a pet shop wholesale supplier and sell it. I still have quite a few pieces around . I was told it was collected and shipped ( which is most of the cost) from Utah . It breaks pretty easy if dropped but makes nice planting stones.
