Will,
In your climate Ponderosa pines should be dynamite. None of the touchiness of black pines in cold weather, plus you have really long summer days and generally cool nights. I started the heavy feeding regime (we have always watered them alot) this year after talking with Walter in Texas, will see how it works in my climate- relatively short summer days relative to the higher latitiudes and frequently warm nights. This goes back to the concept of ability to survive vs the ability to thrive- Cypress in standing water, ponderosa pines and reocky mountain junipers clinging to life on the wind swept, dry mountain terrain.... get the picture?
