Ponderosa Pine
Ok. Here is another of my friends trees.
This is a Ponderosa in a 15 inch pot. He is interested in seeing this tree in different virtuals, perhaps an informal upright. He is hoping some of the virtual gurus could assist him in seeing this tree differently. Paul

A quick-and-dirty subtraction-only, no regrowth virtual.
(Disclaimer: I don't do pines, so I'm hardly the one to ask here.) -OMC

Another amatuer virtual. I think what bothers me is that the eye bounces to too many places. Jin is great, but it has to add to the overall appearance and in this case it distracts.
I just took Carl's virt and went a step further with it to get everything flowing in a pleasing way. Earl |

Thanks, Earl. I much prefer yours!
That big branch sticking off of the curve is too thick, and so you did the tree a favor by cutting it away. Cheers, OMC

IMHO it would be a crime to butcher this pine as you have done in your virtuals. It is a beutiful tree just as it is and only needs some refinement work, not a texas chainsaw massacre. Is the owner just dying to get stuck into something with a pair of branch cutters,if so go down to the garden centre and get yourself a cheap juniper and go berserk.

The owner of the pine is interested in the realm of virtuals. He is pretty happy with the tree, and I am sure that is why he styled it the way he did. He wanted to see it tilted upward and get some ideas from others. If he sees something that he likes he would probably concider it. The virtuals are a great thing to have...
thanks. i will pass these on Paul

I have to agree with Treenut. This tree should not be tried as an informal upright. It is a great tree as it is, given some cleanup. You already have a left branch at the curve, an apex in the middle and a right branch. I'm sure there's some back branches in there. A better rock needs to be used that will fill in that 90 degree angle at the base and give it more of a feel of stability and a different pot should be considered. I believe a certain style is being looked for and this tree is being made to conform. If informal upright is what is desired, then a tree that already lends itself to that style should be acquired.

Here's my virt. I don't like that long horizontal section very much - the tree has an interesting, thin trunk and it might be a good idea to raise it up into more of a bunjin style with a hanging branch.
Regards, Matt

I agree with Steve in that the base is inappropriate for an upright style. It has an extremely precarious look to it now. A slight change in planting angle, perhaps but this would never be a good informal, just less of a slanting/windswept style than it currently is.
It is hard to tell in 2 dimensions. Perhaps your friend sees more t potential than we can see due to this limitation. Effort should be directed to working with the tree's strong points. It has excellent trunk movement. The foliage needs to be refined and better movement given, consistent with the style. I.e., slanting/windswept. Tighten up the foliage, less on the right hand side than on the left. Also, this tree looks as if it is about to fall out of the pot. The tree might look better moved to the right. Or a different pot chosen... What I envision, maybe rotating it clockwise about 15-20 degrees or so, but this should give you the "feel" of what I would strive for. Jim TX |

Jim, how is this new virt less precarious? As far as the trunk being stable, it seems less so to me... That rock was holding the trunk up!
Precariously, Matt
