Ponderosa Bunjin

Hi,
Well another tree worked on with Mike Hagedorn a few weeks ago. This is a Ponderosa Pine that was collected in early 2006 by Andy Smith (www.Goldenarrowbonsai.com) one of the best collectors in North America. The tree is about 21/2 feet tall and was essentially a single branch. The before and after pictures show the results of the first styling , the close up shows the deadwood and sharp turn that drew my eye to this tree sitting on the bench.

Over time the bend bringing the branch back over the top will become more acute, essentially bringing it fully down upon itself.

In three dimensions, (aka in Person) I really like this tree.

John

very nice. i really like the twisted area about half way up the trunk, looks like mother nature helped out with this one. planning on doing anything in that area? not that it's necessary. i'll be watching for progress on this one. great job!!

Chris, nothing really to do to it other than to keep it well preserved and healthy. As soon as I start monkeying with it, it will lose he wild natural look.

"...the bend bringing the branch back over the top will become more acute..."

I like it John...and If it were mine, I would loose a little of the foliage mass...in the future.

Pat

PS...how lucky you are, John, to have had so much help from Mike...

Pat,
I have been very fortunate to interact with a number of very talented bonsai professionals. Mike is part of the extended Boon Family and I am very pleased to be able to contract his services. I certainly don't have the means to be a "patron" but I hope that we are able to maintain a long and fruitful relationship. One of the things that I have learned from both Kathy S and Boon is that we have to work to provide opportunities for these highly talented people when they return from Japan (or elsewhere, China, etc) or come to the US. They need to work and they can only make Bonsai better in the US through their work. Just a bit of philosophy. John

I've got a weeks worth for the Italian Stalion , but I understand he's not visiting you this year. I like the way you learn different styles and techniques from different artists. I wish I could travel as much as you do, but my wife is not as understanding as Von.

Very good phylosophy John...we also need to spread the word on these "new" artists...which you are also doing.

What a beautiful pine, even in a limited 2D photo. I always look forward to images of your pines. They seem to improve at an amazing rate.
