Thanks Tom, I like it even more seeing all sides of this tree. I'm always interested in seeing a before shot and an after shot of the initial styling on ponderosas. I have a couple of small ones I purchased from Andy last year. I'm giving them a go to make sure they will live and prosper down here before attempting a larger and more complex piece of stock.

Thanks again!

Good job Tom! The tree was clearly in the lower half and the top had to go. I would have done something similar....

Ponderosa are a joy to work with. It is amazing how thick of a branch can actully be bent without much harm to the tree. In a few yrs the branches will be set and it will be a great little tree.

Thanks for sharing!

Jason

Jason

I think it is a better transformation than Jason gives credit for - as it sure looks like the top half of the tree was kept and turned into a corkscrew. Well done!

Ok - at least three or four ponderosa pine people here - I have no idea how they should be doing. It's not like I walk down the street and say "oh look, a ponderosa pine right next to that orange tree...". Sure could use some feedback on if things are going "normal" or not. So far so good. I removed them from the smaller pots Andy shipped them in and potted one up in a larger bonsai pot, the other in a colander. Super active root growth on both, new candles opening and buds popping on older wood. But normal?

If I can go a few years showing normal growth patterns I feel the need to get a nice one and perhaps I will be able to post some shots like the ones on this threads.

Anyhow, sorry for the threadjacking Tom. I'm just drooling over some nice material that I may be able to have one day.

Graydon,
I know you like to try the full range of material...... but, i'll be interested to see how ponderosas do. Folks who have tried them in Houston and Louisiana seemm to get 2 or 3 years then RIP (If the summer heat doesn't get them...). Maybe your highs aren't as high, but I'll be interested to see what they do. Keep the Merit, Disyston or oither systemic on them to get the little nasties under control.

(Note; I did not say it can't work, just don't know based on the experiences of others. I have heard that Miami tropical Bonsai had good luck with RMj, for a while at least.) John

Your description of the two Ponderosas sound pretty good. They are doing what we all strive for ....healthy, vigorous trees. As John said, I think the key is critters. If you can keep them at bay, you might have a good shot at producing what you desire .... stonker trees

Drool away my friend, no harm, no foul.

All right, you guys got me!!! I didn't click on every picture, I just saw a much more compact tree and assumed it was the lower 1/2 of the tree.... You know what they say about ASSUME? My bad, next time I will pay better attention.

Great job Tom, and I am far from "Da King"
