Podocarpus Project

Hello folks - New to the forums, so I thought I would start here for some helpful input. I purchased this rather messy Podocarpus earlier this year and transplanted to this pot after a relatively severe root pruning. It has recovered very nicely and really needs a good trimming. As you can see from the pictures, the current branches are everywhere and I'm having a hard time making a decission about where to go. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to this forum! Podocarpus is a seldom seen yet great species for bonsai. When I look at your plan view of this tree, the second thumb you posted appears to be the best front for this tree, as the trunk arcs out to embrace the viewer. I would gradually chase the upward pointing branches back in towards the trunk and leave the cascading branch alone. Have you ever tried wiring this tree? I think you could fix the "messy" appearance of the tree by wiring every branch and echo the flow of the trunk as it emerges from the pot and spills out to the left

Thanks for the suggestions and the welcome! I haven't tried to wire this tree yet, although the previous owner did (slight wire marks are visible as areas on the bark devoid of algae). I like your idea about bringing the branches back towards the trunk, but this will require quite a bit of wiring as there is a lot of lateral spread of these branches (see my 3rd thumb). Also, I'm having a hard time picking an apical branch. Thanks again!
