Don't water the tree till it goes almost dry, that is very important. Most trees in this kind of condition are lost because they are over watered, fertilized and loved to death. Leave it alone and just watch it. There is nothing more you can do for it, if it is going to live it is up to the tree, but there is a lot you can do to it that will cause it's demise even quicker. What ever you do don't go around scratching the bark to see if it is still alive, this accomplishes nothing more than creating another area of shock the tree has to deal with once it starts to become active---if it does. Give it time, a lot of time, maybe into the middle of summer.

do you thikn that, since i pruned around 30% of the roots i should prune some of the branches? the tree has maybe half a dozen shrivelled leaves left on it - without the leaves do i need to bother pruning branches? i would rather leave it alone, but if pruning small branches and twig bits would help then i'll do it to save it!
