Please help ID this tree

I was just given this tree by a friend. I am trying to figure out what species it is. As you can see, it is a little overgrown. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for looking!

Re: Please help ID this tree

Hi there. Im faily new to Bonsai and trees but to me with that serrated leaves its an Ulmus Parvifolia. Its decidous if u keep outside. It can be inside too that way u make evergreen. I see the leaves are very big. Maybe u could prune back and then next year start with the leaves defoliation thing to reduce size. Do some internet search in Ulmus Parvifolia to see if this is your tree. I have one of those. 5 years old. Im attaching the picture so u can see it. Its about 25 cm height. It like when arrived home. Now I did some pruning and there are no more yellow leaves.

Hi there.... I'm not so sure this is an elm. It looks a little more like a Hornbeam or a Zelkova Serrata. I am a novice but I have had both Elms, Hornbeams and Zelkova for a few years. Just my opinion!

Hi Marco,

Thanks for your input. I will look for detailed photos of the leaf structres. I have attached a closeup of one of the leaves. Does this closely resemble yours?

Thanks again!

It could even be a Jacqueline elm (Ulmus x Elegantissima 'Jacqueline Hillier'), but I'm not sure. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

It doesn't look like any elm or zelkova I've seen, the veins are not right. I'm not real familiar with hornbeam so couldn't say. Was this tree from a nursery or was it collected?

Re: Please help ID this tree

My guess would be one of the Celtis species (either C. chinensis or C. africana). The common name for the first is Chinese Hackberry and the latter White Stinkwood. There are quite a number of leaf variations of these trees, but a common characteristic is the 3 prominent veins on the leaf starting at the base of the leaf.

Re: Please help ID this tree

Hello everybody,

Thanks for your input so far. I am fairly sure that the tree came from a nursey. It was a get well gift from a friend that knew I enjoyed bonzai. Unfortunatly, it did not come with the nursery ID tag. I have not come across anything with this leaf structure in any of my books, or anywhere online. I will look into the suggestions that have been listed. Thanks again!

It looks like a Hackberry of some sort to me too.

It's definitely not an elm, hornbeam or zelkova.

Re: Please help ID this tree

I think I got the ID, Celtis africana, White Stinkwood. Thanks for the point in the right direction, AcaciaBonsai. And thanks to everyone else for looking!
