Pinus virginiana

This tree was collected a few years ago. Its on the verge of healthy but until I'm satisfied it can handle it, it'll sit. It just got moved from shady acres to sun central (though its filtered right now for the hottest part of the day) ,so that coupled with an aggressive feeding regimen should see an uptick in vigor and hopefully some new buds.

We'll see what comes of it.

I guess the foliage is pretty confusing. Maybe after I work on it there'll be more to respond to. Thanks for looking.

Just because there were no replies does not mean that there is anything wrong with the material. I doubt alot of people know the characteristics of Virginia Pine. For me - the tree right now is too tall. The cool little bend in the middle of the trunk is about mid-point in the tree - this sort of divides the tree in two. I would rather have that bend in the lower or upper third of the tree. So I think you need to explore ways of making the tree more compact with guy wires; pulling down the key upper branch. Keep working with the terminal buds/candles and develop a dense crown. You can always subtract the branches/buds that you don't want later. Your tree is very sculptural and until you resolve the upper part of the tree - there is no sense to start styling the crown. Do you ever find these pines with a bigger base ? Good luck with your Virginia Pine!

To me it's got bunjin written all over it. But I'm not quite sure how I'd proceed. I'd be afraid to even suggest anything without seeing it in person. I will say that I find #29910 to have an appealing dynamism.

I love virginia pines, but unfortunately - at least in my experience, they do not back-bud very readily. They tend to be very limber, though. I would pull the top down far enough so you can apply an approach graft lower on the trunk.

My plans for it are to get the trunk shape/movement first, then worry about styling the crown. Its going to be literati so I'm not worried about the foliage. I'm surprised that these don't backbud. I've only one other virg. pine but it seems to backbud a pretty good bit though it is pretty young.

Anybody have any ideas on getting the bends that this one needs in the lowest part of the trunk. Wire, even a wire-raffia-wire sammich ain't going to do what I think needs to be done, so I'm open to suggestions.

What do you think needs to be done?

I apologise for the virt, but you'll get the idea. (The foliage will be dealt with/arranged/thought about later). It'll be a little more compacted than the virt too. This is extremely do-able IF I can get a bend in that lower trunk. And I ain't got nothing but time (ie: i 'spect this might have to be a gradual process).

Hi Hackberry, I have to disagree. Virginia Pine back bud like mad if healthy, almost to a fault. See my Pinus virginianus below and I just pinched a ton of buds off of it.
