pine questions
I just bought this Black Pine and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to style it and take care of it? I generally know how to take care of it so Im more interested in the styling.

Several observations, the first being that I have the same zombie book in my bookcase.
I don't know what your knowledge base is so I may be a bit basic. I am not an expert but do have more then a few black pines. In my opinion this tree is in a soil that seems to have a lot of organic material and well it is true black pine will tolerate wetter feet it would be better to have it in a faster draining soil. It may be the photo but this tree looks very weak. I would allow this tree to grow almost untouched for awhile. Feed it heavily but watch for leggy growth. Wiring should be limited to the trunk. The reason pines are so prized is that they take a very long time to develope. Let this tree grow and you will be rewarded with more options in styling. Then agian what do I really know. |

You are correct that this is the wrong soil for this tree. Coolsai, how long have you been doing bonsai? With proper technique it's not too late to repot this tree, but if you haven't done it out of season, it's best to wait until next spring. I don't know what to say about styling it. I appreciate Japanese black pine, and think they get short shrift in most parts of the country. I have a number of them and learn more every year. In fact I am studying them with a professional. I have, in my early years, bought a number of JBP in pots just like this one. They are all compost now. In my honest opinion, this tree has little or nothing to offer for bonsai. Its chief value will be for you to practice and learn new techniques so that you feel comfortable in the future buying a better piece of material. Read up a lot. Use the search button here. Check photos of good trees. I wish you luck and hope you keep up with it and stay active here. |
