Pfitzer Juniper

Hello Everyone,

Here is a pfitzer juniper collected by a friend in January 2002. The first photo is just after collection. It has grown like mad and filled the tub with roots.

Yesterday I went in to find the lifelines and clean up the deadwood. This is the result. More carving will be done on the lower left nub. The tub is cut at the odd angle to match the top of the rootball. I pulled the tree from the tub to reposition it closer to the final planted angle, taking care not to disturb the roots too much, and then I put it right back into the tub. This allowed following the lifeline to the roots. Moss was placed on the surface to keep the soil from washing away and keep all of the roots alive until repotting when the soil line can found. The plan is to style this fall and repot in the spring.

Any ideas out there for arranging the foliage? Pot suggestions?

David

I'd like to see all of the foliage at the bottom with the dead wood going up beyond. I don't know if that is possible, I don't work with junipers.

This is a rough virt of what I have in mind. The foliage on pfitzers is too floppy to make pads this neat, but this shows the basic arrangement planned. Virtuals, pot suggestions and comments welcome.

Hello Everyone,

Here's the first basic shape wiring for this tree. It will go into a training pot this spring and then I'll let it recover for a while and maybe begin refinement next year. I think this design is much better than the previous virt. What do you think? Any pot suggestions?

Best Regards,

David

I almost like the rear for the front better.

Personally I like you're front better. If you tidy up the foliage pads a bit and add a bit more texture to the jin and shari I think you will have a great tree. A nice round, unglazed, nail head pot would be my choice for a pot.
All in all, a good job.

This is a crude cleanup to better show what's planned. This front was chosen as the best combination of taper, movement and branching. The addition of another well placed shari will accent the subtle movement in the lower trunk that doesn't show well in the photo. Critiques, virts and more pot suggestions are welcomed.

Regards,

David
