Penjing questions II,garden sabina
Hello,
I have bought this tree from a landscape nursery and given this tree its first ruff styling.I was thinking it would be a good choice for Penjings.I assume this could be another example of a "Shanghi Penjing" style?,the juniper actually has a bit of twist to the trunk and not really a C curve.I think it may work still? I have left it in a mushroom shape for time being and wonder if it is ok to go ahead and remove say..close to half of the green up top,or what would you do? I have removed branches/foliage and an extra couple of trunks already so maybe safer to let it rest until next year but all that aside do you think a styling is availble for this tree? Thanks.

Hello Red, There is no way to offer an opinion or advice on this tree because the images are too dark. I would be happy to see the tree re-submitted in a lighter depiction. Kind regards Ash

Hi Red, The middle branch at the top after the skinny one would be my new apex wired to the right to de-accentuate the curve in the trunk. The next branch on the left stub jin and the balance would be carved deadwood. I would continue the shari down the trunk to meet the bottom jin. Lightning strike on the trees' left perhaps. Only my first thoughts. Regards Ash

Hi Red,
Nice tree. You know, if anything stumps me, its junipers. I have 3 really nice big ones, can't or am afraidto do anything to them. I have had them for 10 years or more. I trim the roots. Listen to Mr. 9999. His idea is good. ![]() Peace Bob

Hi, Ash thanks, I am reading your choice for the apex branch (leader),and the more carving the better.I can't really follow the rest though as I have qouted above.I just can't figure out what your saying I guess. I found a pic of a tree that has the feel of the penjing theme I was thinking about.I don't know how difficult this would be with a juniper, just what I was thinking about when I bought the tree at the time.

bonsai is not my hobby

Red Pine,
your plans are OK. Why you insit on calling the tree a 'penjing' is unclear to me. It seems that you call anything penjing that does not fall into the strict traditional model.

Hi Walter,
Penjing to the best of my understanding is a tree being trained in one of the Chinese themes. The pics I am studying are all from penjing books, websites and forums. This picture of a show tree I am using is from the Man Lung website. The only answer I can give is that to me this trees trunk looks Chinese and I think will lend itself easier to a Chinese form because of the curving motion. Thanks.

Wes ok by the balance i mean all growth to the left be de-barked and refined as deadwood with stub jinned branches. Wire every thing down to fall off to the left for a year if you wish then strip the bark and refine. Pre-wiring foliage for future jinning is good practice as you are following a long term plan. As with chess think long term. Kind Regards Ash
