Penjing For The Plant Sale

During the Fresno Bonsai society show this April, I will have the opportunity to move out some stock that is sitting around and taking up space. Leave alone the fact that it will never be anything good. You remember the Five for the future, the junipers that I had pruned for the windswept forest, well I repotted them to get rid of. I did not take pics of those. I wanted to keep some of the pots, since some of them were highly collectable.

The tree that I did do, turned out pretty well as a small penjing. I used a shimpaku that was the first one I ever bought. I bought it bare root from the Sorge Family at some mail order bonsai place in Texas. I have had it all this time. It was bought in 1984. When I bought it, it came in a sandwich bag, and the trunk was about the size of a match stick, and it cost 8.00 bucks. Talk about robbery. The trunk is nearly an inch now.

I decided that the public likes things gawdy, the more the better. I decided that I would use a stone, everyone like rocks right. Then I decided I would throw in some grasses, maybe some blueye grass, and some mondo grass and moss.
I pruned and shaped the tree to look as Chinese as I could. I wanted the cliff style look. A little windswept, but very Penjing.

All I need now is a small pagoda glued to the cliff and I will be set. I'll look for that tomarrow. I think I have one somewhere here. I keep alot of mudmen around, you never can tell when Tony may drop by!

Here's a better view of the top of the container with all the grasses and moss.

I completle agree with you on this. This is the mindset of the American public and the reason why we get such gawdy bonsai for sale. That is what they want. Ive seen really nice material just sit there. But If you put a rock ,some mondo and a little wire, it will fly off the shelf. I dont get it , but thats the truth.

OMC, I'm sure of that too!!!!!

Al, so since you are going to sell it is it ok to ask you what you will sell it for or is that question stepping on too many toes, etc.

Must be the truth. They continue to sell those chia pets don't they. I saw a chia pig on sale last Christmas. Only $14.95!

David, I am never insulted when talking about money. I don't understand why some get all put out over discussing money issues. It's just money...
I will start at 75.00. It's a two day event so I can always lower it on the second day if the thing is still knocking around. I do not want to take this back home!

Thanks Al. Its always good to get an indication on pricing trees.

I think that is a good idea about pricing it high first and then bringing down the price if it doesn't sell. Thats what I do when I want to get rid of a few of my trees.

I also don't understand the problem with talking about money. We aren't trying to sell anything on this site, just giving people a good indication.

Hope it sells Al.
