Ow my fingers
After well over 8 hours of wiring I finally finished up my large juniper. Its not in the right pot or even properly situated in the current pot but I can work on that. If anyone has any pot ideas (or other comments) i'd be interested.
Please excuse the rebar Photos are front, back, crown detail Cheers Ian |

Looks like great work and good progress. What variety of juniper? Like the deadwood/lifeline balance.
I'm curious about bringing the tree inside for at least part of one day to work on it. What do you do for wintering it the rest of the winter? Or do you think it may already have had enough dormancy? Your thinking, or anybody else??

Hi David, I think its a pfitzer juniper but I'm not 100% sure on that. As for working it inside, a day or 2 inside isn't likely to bring a plant out of dormancy but as a thorough wiring can be stressful it will be spending the rest of the winter in my unheated shed. However I must admit it doesn't get too cold here currently in the 50s through the day and it very rarely goes below 20 at night. Cheers Ian |

Awesome tree! I concur with the collegue from Jersey about the Shari/live balance. Stunning crown and wire job. Please post after proper pot is found.

Great work, Ian. Maybe next time draw the curtains - they look like they'd make a great backdrop.
Regards, Matt

Bringing a dormant bonsai indoors to work on during the winter will not "automatically" bring the tree out of dormancy. Not even for a few hours or even days. However, after wiring, especially for evergreens (because the inside foliage which was protected from the cold air is now exposed to air) the tree must be kept just a bit warmer than normal. Your unheated garage sounds fine.
Sorry, I do not like the relationship of dead wood to living tissue. They seem too even for my taste. Perhaps you can turn the tree a little to show a different relationship of dead/living areas, or remove more dead wood in some areas. Unfortunately, you can't quickly add live wood. Or you could PAINT the dead wood... there was one such tree exhibited at the World Bonsai Covention. From a distance it looked magnificient, then from close up I could not believe it. I don't even think I photographed it as I was so discusted. Bill

The second picture has a more interesting shari/lifeline relationship but would need some wiring adjustment to make this the front view.
The shari/lifeline is a little boring in the first picture. That said, it is still a fantastic tree. |
