Opinions please
I am considering training this tree into a Bonsai. As you can see the trunk has potential. The problem I am having is deciding on the style and training. I am considering dividing the tree into two but worried about the outcome and appearance of the base.
I would like your opinions and suggestion on what direction I should go with this. Many thanks. ![]() |

Re: Opinions please
I would remove the Left trunk, and upon repotting I would repostion the remaining trunk such that it is suited for informal upright. Than I would gradually stimulate budding back by gradually (ie not in one growing season) chopping back the trunk, until the desired branches are obtained. I think this would take more than my growing season.
It could be stupid but its my opinion!!! ![]() |

Re: Opinions please
I am having a hard time discerning the tree from the background without Geodude's infrared film.
I can see based on the angle that the trunk emerges, that the bonsai would probably be tipped forward about 45 degrees, so maybe if you reshoot it with the trunk at that angle and something a bit plainer behind it, we could go from there. I mean tipped forward as a book lying open on the table in front of you would be tipped forward to read. I wouldn't be hasty to cut off that left branch, It might turn out to be interesting.

Re: Opinions please
It would be nice to see a clearer picture.
In the meantime, I might consider changing the planting angle so that the tree is nearly upright, and styling as a literati. Either a twin-trunk or a single trunk (probably the right one) would be feasible.

Re: Opinions please
mmmm... I think I would airlayer the left trunk, then train the right one as a literati, like OMC said, then, the left one like an informal upright...

Re: Opinions please
Hi KPH,
I think Matt's right. Don't cut of the left trunk just yet. This could turn out to be a very nice double trunk literati. I've included a picture from Bonsai Europe magazine (I'm sure they have copyright but this is just for the example, tree is styled and owned by Terry Foster) that shows what I mean. If you don't like it, you can always cut the trunk later. gr. René ![]() |

Re: Opinions please
Ok, I'll remove my idea, I had never seen a tree like the one you posted Rene... KPH, that's the best advice... do what they say...

Re: Opinions please
Many openions will inspire more thought and this is good. With trees it is very easy to remove material and very difficult to regrow what you have removed and sometimes impossible. I also would like to see a clearer picture of the tree that you are asking an openion of.

Re: Opinions please
Great picture, Rene! Thanks for posting that. That was pretty much what I had in mind when suggesting a double-trunk literati.

Re: Opinions please
No need to retract your idea, Jose! I think it's a very good one. And my bet is that it's the right way to go with this particular tree. That right trunk should make a nice literati on its own.
I just wanted to consider the possibility of a twin-trunk as well. KPH, if you can post a clearer picture of the tree with some kind of solid background behind it, I bet a number of people would put together virtuals. It's a fun tree to think about!
