One For The Birds To Fly Through

These procumbens have a way of getting away from you awful fast if your not careful. I had to spend a couple of hours cleaning this one up. It could probably use a little more time on it, but then so could a lot of my others

Thomas:

I have seen a number of your procumbens posted here and they are all wonderfull.

I do have one question:

How do you keep them from reverting to Juvinille folliage?

I have one tree that has only put on juvinille folliage since my initial styling. I am just looking for some imput and have not yet found a difinitave answer.
Thanks in advance,

Matt

Thomas... You have a very nice eye for bonsai design. Every tree I have seen you exhibit on this site has been an exceptional specimen. Your bio says you have only been doing bonsai for 12 years. Your trees exhibit the styling technique and care of someone with a lot more experience. You are obviously a quick learner. Nice stuff.... Keep up the good work.

Matt.... Junipers have two types of foliage... needle and scale. The needle like is often called "juvenile" although that is a mis-nomer. Needle foliage is the normal condition for a procumbens nana. Scale is the normal condition for a shimpaku. Many times... if you foliage prune a juniper with scale like foliage really hard (such as a shimpaku), the tree will respond with needle foliage (juvenile). Its just trying to get as much green stuff out their to conduct photosynthisis with as quickly as possible. Don't worry... Once the plant calms down a little, the foliage will revert back to its normal scale like form. Overfeeding can also sometimes get you needle growth as well.

Randy, Matt,
Thanks for the really nice comments, I appreciate it.

For those who haven't been around here that long, here is a pic of the tree at purchase two and a half years ago. You probably can't tell from the current photo but that little jin on the right side has been removed.

Randy:

Thanks so much for the very concise reasoning. This is the best explanation of this phenomenon (sp?) that I have yet to hear. I will see how the tree responds next season.

Thanks,

Matt
