Older Shimpaku: Ideas needed!
I got this Shimpaku in July of last year and have only thinned it out some and pinched some of the pads.
I think it is time for a repot, due to the exposed roots and all. I had some conflicting opinions as to how to proceed with this tree's future. I didn't want to repot without some opinions from everyone here, b/c a friend of mine suggested changing the planting angle. So before I repot, I would like some help from you all to decide if I should change the planting angle and what you would do with this tree. Also, what should I do with this tangle of surface roots I have? When I repot, should I just put more soil in to cover these roots up or try to trim them up? Any and all opinions, advice and photoshops are very much appreciated and valued. Thanks. Last edited by Maveri9720 : 26-Mar-2006 at 01:29 PM. |

Maveri,
This is what I see... Kept the angle pretty much the same. the first branch will have to be wired down and youll have to hard prune the whole tree to about 1/2 of the foliage to get it to back bud. Make sure this tree is in good health before attempting a drastic restyling. When the styling is done I would consider a much smaller "drum" style pot. Good Luck, Moe |

Thanks for your time and insight Moe. I really like your virtual. It looks very natural and intriguing.
That looks like a great way to go. Thanks again. |

If the trunk is already dead on the front side in picture 34771 then you should use the shari of the trunk idea given by Moe. If it isn't then I would use picture #34772. Without changing the planting angle in this pot, the tree leans forward in this picture 34772 while in the first picture it leans back. Also the top foliage is in front in the second picture 34772 while the first picture it is in the back. In my opinion the second picture would give me a tree easier to work worth and a number of options. Here is a very quick and drity virtual without changing the tree planting angle.
