Ok so it looks like a unanimous answer - Pin Oak (Quercus palustris Muenchh). Thanks, I wish I could find an acorn as the picture is of a cutting that I gave up on. But I would love to grow one from an acorn. Hey kcpoole can I see a pic of your pin oak bonsai...it doesn't matter if it's in a "rough" period and not fully established. I always have a hard time finding pics of any oak bonsai on the net and in publications, so I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hiya Dendro

sorry it took a while to get back
Here are some pictures of my PinOak in development.

Collected / saved from Buldozers down the road about 3 years ago. It was about 8 ft tall and I chopped it about 18 Inches above the ground when I repotted it in this large pot.

1st is when I first collected it
next is last year coming into winter
3rd is the leaves
last was last weekend

Thanks kcpoole, you've been real helpful and I appreciate it. It looks like your pin oak will make a rather good bonsai tree.
