Nursery collected oaks

My friendly neighborhood nurseryman was "culling the herd" this week. He had taken a chainsaw to trees he was going to trash (grown through the pots, material he can't sell, etc.). When I came along, he said I could have any of that stuff I wanted if I dug it out of the ground. I took two hawthorns right then, and went back today to dig the oaks. I took two willow oaks, one laurel oak, and one English oak.

Here are the willow and laurel oaks prior to digging.

Here they are after three hours of digging. The English oak is hidden behind one of the others in this pic. Since they had been fed and watered exclusively through the tops of the pots, each had a pot-sized ball of feeder roots in addition the to heavy roots I cut off at the ground.

Here are the two willow oaks at home, potted in half wine barrels for now. I didn't put them in the ground right away since I anticipate moving sometime this year. This year I'll choose a new leader to wire up, and then grow some taper over the next, say, five years.

Anyway, four oaks and two hawthorns for free, saved from the trash heap. I'm happy.

Here is an update on one of the willow oaks. The chop is obvious, but the straight growth above it is from one season in a pot. I've just spread the roots out for now. Given a chance, I'll plant this in the ground "as is" by spring.

Another of these willow oaks, updated after repotting. Two good sized, but still pliable, limbs to use in the canopy this spring.

Brian, its always nice to make a find like that. I'm glad they found a good home.
And I'm sure you'll make the most of them.

Good luck, ....Hector

Tony,

I'll be updating pics on the hawthorns in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks
Brian

Continuing update: I decided to do the initial wiring on this willow oak. Here are the before and after, heading toward a live oak style. I heard some cracks in this process, but it looks like the limbs will survive the process.
