New Trident Forest

What would you change? I rotated the far right tree tonight to place branching on the inside. I also trimmed and adjusted a few other smaller trees.

I wouldn'thave placed the largest tree all the way to one side

It seems it will be hard to balance your composition.I am reluctant to offer up any "rules" but there are aesthetic reasons for many of them.

The focal tree needs to be placed to the left or right of center. Enough so that you can tell its off center. The rest of the trees should be composed as to highlight the focal tree. The heights of the smaller trees need to vary more in height. As you look to the left of the composition, the trees are all the same height.

I would shorten at least 4 of these trees. Probably the smallest of the lot. It also works well to have a central theme group, with a smaller group to the other side with some negative space for interest. Pruning some roots off of a side or two of a few trees and placing them along side each other helps with interest too.

The virtual I did is by no means the only possibility. There are countless designs that will help make a forest seem like a forest. While putting trees together in a tray may seem simple, arrangeing them into an artistic composition is something that takes much practise and time. The virtual does not do justice to working trunks in close proximity of each other, but I hope you get the idea.

regards, Bonsai-al

I'm probably doing this totally wrong, but I thought I would give it a shot anyways... I was never good with forests.. But there is always time to learn

first is how I would do it from the front

Awesome Kaz. That is what I am talking about. I like the negative space on the right. That is also a very dramatic idea that is very artistic. I like that way you have used the geometrics shapes to compose the idea. Like a video I saw from Kato.

Why thank you Al. I've always seen those birds eye view drawings in my japanese bonsai books, so I thought that I would give it a try!

Thanks guys! I will conitnue to work with the trees. I potted them a few days back, should I leave them be, or re-arrnage before bud break? I don't want to over stress them.

You can repot them if you want. They haven't grown much if at all in a few days.

BTW: When possible, do upload the photos you post. Especially if you are asking suggestions. The reason for this is that the referred links almost always turn into RED Xs within a month or so when the poster's free server gets cleaned out, or they start charging for hosting, or any of a dozen other things.

Then, what becomes a useful thread to future forum visitors looks like this

Please help me out with my tree. What would you do?

Regards,

Matt
