new strain of bald cypress; my greatest discovery

new strain found by seedling variation. plan to graft on to some of my bigger cypress next year. super super super small needles. slow growing also. the seedling in this pic is about three years old and is about three inches tall and has only been pruned once. great back budding as in all bald cypress. ill post the pic of adult versus the new cultivar needle size later.

Is that large needle from a mature tree, or is it from a seedling also?

Very interesting! Good luck!!!

Not trying to blow holes in it, but have you had this confirmed as a new cultivar? If so you could be on to a winner here, good luck!

TGID,

this is VERY cool. I hope yer right on the cultivar. If this is a reproducible mutation or allele, it would be a boon for the art.

Keep us posted.

If its from seed, it'd be a variety rather than a cultivar (iiuc).

I'm not sure about conifers, but with Japanese maples most of the cultivars were originally from a selected seedling that was deemed unique enough to be registered as a new cultivar.

P.S. The trees true characteristics probably cannot be seen while it is in a very small pot. It would have to be able to maintain the small needle size in a landscape setting to have much value as a new introduction, IMO.

It would be a variety until it has been asexually reproduced from grafting or rooting. If successful it could be a named cultivar (I am sure there is a huge process for that). Take photos, take notes and document everything. Start researching the process for naming a cultivar. It's apparently a long process.

Sports, stunts and witches brooms are all viable material as long as they can be successfully reproduced by cloning or grafting. Need to make sure that process reproduces true to parent plants that don't revert back to typical.

I have my eye on several witches brooms on sand pines out in the wild. I will harvest some scion material this winter and try grafting. Post any info you find out on naming cultivars you discover because I may have the opportunity as well.

Very cool stuff. Good luck!
