Al, was your advice hiden in that post? Should I just let it fatten up a bit and pinch it for ramification? I want to hear what you have to say about the tree as well as what you have to say about OMC.

Thanks All

Mittar, That would be it exactly. Great things about Elm's, they grow fast and they ramify very easily. Get some size on the trunk and fatten those branches a little. Pinch every chance you get. Get the ends forking as soon as possible in the year, so as to use every bit of your growing season.

I just looked at the two views, I asked myself, remembering what Walter Pall hasaid in the past, Just look at the two photo's, the actual tree and the virt that OMC did. Which one, in the state the tree is in right now, looks more like a tree.

Just one thing, I have done my share of pine tree styled elm's. I think they look wonderful. I like these too. I am not meaning that OMC's virtual is the wrong thing to do. I just feel that the tree right now looks like an elm tree. Why make it look like something thats not natural for the sake of restyling. Use the attributes offered by the tree and go with them.

Take a look at the two trees on the right in my forest. Both of them are styled with pine tree branches and pointy tops. The other trees including the mother tree tend to have rounded tops and seem more tree like. Just my opinion.

I am working to naturalize the other trees in this group. I plan on having that done this growing season.

Mittar,

On the tree you have posted, the moyogi style might be the easier way to go. The tree already has a very pronounced 'S' movement to the trunk and is not growing like a standard naturalistic elm anyway due to this.

Perhaps you can use OMC's styling idea, together with Al's advice to use what the tree offers? Unless Al is suggesting that you use the current moyogi trunk-line, with a more naturalistic domed crown...? That might be interesting.

Regards,

Fish.

Well living in an area that has elms growing as weeds, I see many elms with lots of movement in their trunks. I also have lots of trees in nature from which to get inspiration.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I plan to use them all.

Thomasj, I thought I had my "mental model" of pre-bonsai development all worked out, and then you come along with your comments! I'd like to just ignore them, but your trees in your photo gallery are just toooo nice for me to do that!

You talk about grow boxes as being where a tree gets larger without any styling. I had pictured that environment as being my new grow beds, with trees moving to my grow boxes pretty much at the point they had attained their completed size in my grow beds. I would then concentrate on refining the nebari and developing the basic branch structure in my grow boxes, with fine branch ramification taking plce after their final moves to bonsai pots.

Does this make sense to you or do you have a bsacally different conception of the pre-bonsai development of a tree? I know there is more than one way to skin this particular cat, but I wonder if you see the differences in my ideas as just personal preference.

Thanks, Fred
