This choice species has two Japanese names: "Ko Fuji" (Dwarf Wisteria) and "Mekura Fuji" (Blind Wisteria). It is called Blind Wisteria because it "never" blossoms. I've been growing this species for over 25 years and have never seed it flower. Boon in CA told me his flowered, and I did not believe him until he sent me photo of it. I now believe him, as well as the bonsai person (who used to drink) who also told me this species blossomed about 25 years ago.

There is a five page article on this species in my International BONSAI magazine in the 2004/No. 1 issue. It has five black and white photos of some of the most famous and largest Dwarf Wisteria in Japan.

Even if this plant did not flower, it is great for it's bright green delicate foliage. One tip, do NOT allow this species to dry out, it only has to happen once before the plant turns crispy.

Good luck with your specimen. It's one of the largest and oldest Dwarf Wisteria I have seen and probably so because it came from the famous Domoto Nursery in Hayward CA. The two Japanese brothers who established this superb nursery were real plantsmen.

Bill....

Along with John, I thank you for the detail of your answer. I will have to look through all my back issues of International Bonsai that I got as a little x-mas gift. I very well may have the issue you are refering to... if not, then I'll be sure to order it, if it is still available. I had a great deal of fun looking through extremely old issues from back in the day. I chuckled to myself at how the art has changed so much that what would be condemed as a "stick in a pot" now, was worthy of printing then... because everyone was just happy to be doing it, and grateful for a place to share. I think something has been lost in all the ease of our communication and sharing these days. Hard to snipe through a magazine.

I tried to find more information about the Domoto Nursery when Sharon told us of it's origins... there isn't much available on-line.... but what I can see, it was quite a loss that none of the family continued the brother's work.

Kindest regards,

Victrinia

Coincidentally, I had just re-read this issue before seeing this thread!

Bill, I think I must have a "Blind" Nagasaki crabapple I bought from Torrpa years ago!!

Ang and Vic,
Actually, IMHO, that longward pointing branch dying was not a bad thing...... I like it as a kinda windswept look more than as a cascade!
Reminds me of the trees that are along the riverbank here.
