New Material - Acer buergerianum Over Rock

I purchased this tree from Rob at http://www.newworldhorticulture.com/. He has some really nice stock in pots and in the ground at really great prices.
I saw this trident when our club went for a road trip one Sunday afternoon to visit Rob. I didn't purchase it then and kept kicking myself for it. I emailed Rob and told him I was interested in buying it and he held it for me till we met later at treebenders house to help put the poly on his greenhouse. Delivery and everything... can't beat that service. By the way, Rob is located about 2 and a half hours away... what a great guy.
He said that he had been growing this trident on this rock for quite some time.
I can't waite to start working on the branching.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice,

Brian

THis is an interesting piece. If it were mine I'd chop it where the nebari (trunk base) ends and create a much smaller tree. This would make for a more intersting tree and also emphasize growth over the rock.

the tree is good some great potential but im sorry to say as a root over rock, i dont know that it will ever be convincing. i find the rock too small for those roots, they look as though they are growing over the rock forming a cage but not clasping the rock. this in turn is causing an unstable feeling. hey its all good if you like it.

I'm not sold on the grasp this tree has on that rock. It could use another year being buried with the rock ...to my eye. There are also some roots that should be snipped off (that aren't grasping the rock or start too high on the trunk).

I'd also chop below the first branch growing on the left in 54787 and start developing a much smaller tree. The top of this tree has little going for it (long straight trunk, branches above thicker than branches below...). Tridents grow quickly so being drastic now will be rewarded in the near future.

The tree has overrun the rock. A few years ago this would have been a pretty good root over rock. As it is now, it looks unstable and the rock is barely visible and will become even more invisible as time goes on.

I'd air layer above the claw roots that cover the rock.

I agree. Probably about here:

Thanks for your replies everyone. I was planning on reducing this one quite a bit. I agree, there isn't much going on in the top 3/4 of the tree to work with.

I hadn't thought about airlayering though. I think that I will reduce it dramatically and get it into a shallower training pot. Then start to position any branches that it puts out after the chop.

Any suggestions on when the proper time to do this is? I was planning on this spring when I repot it.

Thanks again,

Brian

The rock was used to dvelop the trunk spread which it is doing. Chopping this maple now would be a mistake. It has much more growth to accomplish.

I'd consider replacing the rock with a larger one if possible. It certainly has developed a decent spread.
