New Japanese Maple

I just picked up this Japanese Maple today and I wanted to know if I took some of this folliage off by the trunk because it seems so crowded. Should I wait? would it be detrimental to the tree?

It depends on what stage of development you are up to weith the tree.

1. If you are trying to grow it out develop trunk girth, then leave it all on and let it go mad.

2. If you are up to trying to train the tree to be a bonsai stage. then you would be selectively removing the unwanted branch and foliage from the final design.

3. If you are maintaining the tree as a "finished" Bonsai, the you would be doing tip pruning and selective fine tuning

Where are you up to with the tree? Looks to me like 1 or maybe 2.

Thanks that helps a lot. I'd say I'm still in #1 although the trunk is a nice size I have a lot of time to wait. Thanks tho!

You have a nice sacrifice branch down low. I usually always have to thread graft one on before I plant it out. Is this A P 'Orange Dream'? Unless you are going for a small tree I'd say this is in the #1 stage of fattening it up - therefore NO PRUNING EXCEPT TO PRESERVE THE LOWEST PORTIONS OF THE TREE for future use.

Assess the trunk line and see if you can trace some nice movement using existing branches as a continuation of the trunk - angle the plant manually if needed or use wedges. If possible do this with the sacrifice branch to the back - when it gets cut off it will leave a big scar for a while.

If you can't see a nice continuation then I'd guy / wire a branch as your first trunk change in direction. It's always good to have in your mind's eye the final height of the tree (remember the 6:1 rule as a general guide). Remember that you have only about 6 - 8 inches of your final tree contained in this material at the moment. Keeping the apex in tact will reduce the internode spacing down low - let the top explode and grow, only removing branches that shade the bottom 8 inches of the plant.

Before bud break next spring do some nebari correction. It looks a semi juvenile plant so it might be OK to get as much as poss over a tile.

Good luck!
