New here! plus meet my new chinese elm

Hi everyone, Im new here! I live in Perth, western Australia. I recently purchased this chinese elm from a really good bonsai nursery. I forgot to ask how old this bonsai is when i bought it but it has pontential to be a good tree I think. i know the photo quality is not the best...sorry. but anyway let me know what you think of it. its a good first bonsai i think. I paid just under $200 AU dollars for it.

anyway I hope to get to know you all very soon and learning lots about my new interest in bonsai's

kindest regards,

Which really good nursery? The pic does not give us much, it is in need of a good prune.

I am a fellow West Australian, The Bonsai society of W.A is holding there annual show in Fremantle Town Hall on the 21st 22nd of this month.
Go along although we are on the other side of this huge continent, we still put on a premier show.
To rival those in the East we have it on good authority. Pup

Welcome to a life long obsession!

Briefly - work on bending the branches so that they point downwards, and reduce the foliege so it becomes bushier near the branch. I know thats basic, but it took me ages to realise that drastically enhances the tree

Thumbs up

Hi Bek, What nursery did you get this from?

It's a nice starter tree for you, but the price is rediculous...

I'd love to know who's getting away with selling twigs in pots for $200...

I bet they'd freak out if they knew their tree had been posted at bonsaitalk lol

Be careful Bec cos as you learn, you'll want more and more trees...Then you'll start to enjoy making your own soil...Before you know it...You'll need bonsai rehab...Its a great hobby to get addicted to!

Good luck with your future trees and see if you can take a pic first before buying anymore and we'll guide you to beat down the price

Happy growing
Tai

Hello Again

Hi there, yeah I am planning on going to the annual show and having a look and i'll proberly join a club too then.

it is a pretty bad picture of the elm I know but it does have potential I think. I am a bit scared to prune anything until i know what im doing so maybe I can do some pruning at my first club meeting or something and get some much needed guidance on what branches to prune and more importantly what to leave alone!

I got this tree from a place called bonsai bamboo in south lakes (or jandakot)? it had ALOT of tree's! I thought it was one of the better nurseries of the ones I have already visited in perth anyway.

hope to meet you in person sometime PUP.

Kind regards,
Bek

Welcome to BonsaiTalk..
You have just given yourself the first bit of sound advise. Don't do anything until you have done some basic learning about the species & bonsai in general. It is a very good idea to join a local club. There is also a wealth of information and assistance here so look around and don't be afraid to ask...

Stephen..

Bec I am the short fat guy with glasses I will be doing a talk (demonstration on Sat at 1 pm so you know who to look for.

At the October meeting it is a workshop so you will be able to get plenty of advise. Also help with style and pruning. I have always thought they were over priced on some things and reasonable with other. There are only three Bonsai nurseries left in the metro area now. I am sure you will learn from your experience. Hope to see you there and here is one to aim for.
