New here, olive tree.

Hi, I'm new here. I had a tree a couple of years ago wich died. Anyway I thought I would give it a try again.

I just bought this tree like 2 hours ago. It's real hard to find trees here (sweden). And it doesn't even look close to the ones I have seen here. Hope this one will survive and perhaps develope to a beautiful tree.

I'm thinking I should just leave it to grow by itself for now. I'm not even sure what type it is hope you can tell me more about it and what you think I should do. It's some sort of olive tree. It looks very dark in the picture but it's not. Is spraying it a little with water 2-3 times a week ok?
The last tree died because of too much water.

Re: New here, olive tree.

Great to see another person from Nordic countries!
That's my problem too (lack of bonsai). There are no bonsai nurseries here in Finland. Is there any in Sweden?

Your tree's an average mallsai, just like all in my country too. Maybe you could try cutting the trunk just above the highest branch. It'll be much nicer in a couple of years.

Hope we'll meet again.

Re: New here, olive tree.

Here's a virtual of the tree. I cut the trunk as I described above and changed the color of the pot. It could be less distracting, if it was darker blue, but...
I also pinched it a bit.

cant see the pic.

No I dont think there are any here either, nurseries that is.

lol at the pot. I couldn't find anything to have under the pot it's planted in. And that one fitted perfect around the other one.

Re: New here, olive tree.

Hi there
I've added general information on Olea europea spp. africana (Wild olive) on my website this weekend. There are some pictures of these trees as bonsai (for a bit of insperation). I believe that the care and characteristics of the common olive (Olea europea spp. europea) and the wild olive is prety much the same.
Hope the info on the website will help (even if it's only for inspiration!)
Regards
Bertie

ok cool, I can see the picture now. I'll just have to read up on how to do it. Or maybe you can tell me, do I just cut it off?

Re: New here, olive tree.

I suppose you don't have a concave cutter? If you do that's great, if you don't that's not so bad. You can probably use secateurs as well (I'm not sure of olive, could someone please tell).

Just make the cut as sharp as possible so it will heal better. You should probably use some grafting paste or something like that on the wound.

If you can, go to library and hunt down all the bonsai books they have there.

Re: New here, olive tree.

yea I'll try and find something I can cut with. And buy some of that paste as well. It's not like I have to do this tomorrow anyway.

Thanks for the help.
