New Forsythia

My neighbors had a small clump of forsythia that they have been continually chopping off every year. So this spring I hopped the fence (with permission) and dug it all up. I don't know yet if they'll all make it past this summer since the root system was very poor, but here's some of what I came home with.

Erik, I've seen pictures of Forsythia used for bonsai. I really like your trunk; reminds me of a Blueberry I have. I would say that Forsythia is a bit off the beaten path, but "Bravo!" as far as I'm concerned.

Erik,
I had two very old collected forsythia which did fine with little roots from collecting. Both had lots of rotted wood as yours to carve and seal with min-wax wood hardener after they were treated/colored. Unfortunately I can't find pics now and they were sold several years back.
One hint, since branches are hollow , seal them with putty or glue where you cut them shorter or water will seep down inside and they will rot. This is a bigger problem as the branchs get bigger since the holes also get bigger! It'll save you some problems with yearly die-back.
Don't attempt too much wiring, it's pretty much a clip-n-grow plant.
I'll see if I can find an old photo to scan.
Dale
