New elm stump

I had fun Friday....got to meet Cbobgo, and Brent. Brent's nursery is hosting HeyMikey's trees, and they let me come up for an auction preview.

Before I saw a post by Walter on Brent's nursery, I was under the mistaken impression that he sold only small (but quality) stock. I had bought several little trees from him in the past. I really wasnt prepared for the huge number of massive trunks that Brent has! Really wonderful stock!

I had to have at least one, and since I couldn't afford more than one, here it is.

WOW WOW WOW

That is wonderful! With a trunk like that, it will take many years to work up a set of primary branches to scale --- but I'm sure you'll have a good time of it.

I noticed Brent started a specimen cataloque on the web page a couple years ago, but he doesn't have any trees posted for sale? How many species of stumps is he selling?

Well, let's see....I saw huge corkbark elms, hokaido elms with a bigger caliper than I've seen anywhere else, a variety of junipers in the ground that would make any master drool, maples, mugos, of course black pines, dawn redwood, a variety of California oaks, ....lots more....I'll keep thinking. Maybe cbobgo will chime in with some I've forgotten.

The greater question is why arent they advertised for order/sale on the website? Is size an issue as far as shipping goes??

Hi Brian, Being fairly new to bonsai I'm curious as to how long you think it will take to create a bonsai tree from your new stump, which BTW is a beaut. I've seen the progression of a BC stump to a bonsai tree but your elm looks like it will require quite a bit more work and be much more difficult to transform than a BC. Good Luck with it and I hope you show some photos as it progresses. I've also been looking for some larger stock to appear on Brents site maybe cbob can enlighten us?

Sauce,

I'd guess three years to grow some taper, while starting on the primary branches, then another two for secondary, finer branching. Hopefully by then I'll know how to style a tree, and it won't take more than a year or two to finish it up....

I too hope that Brent will start taking pics of the great stock he has, and post them on his site for sale.
