I'm only guessing here, but I'm thinking what you have there may be a witch's broom, or yatsabusa (in Japan). In Japan, natural yatsabusa are treasured for bonsai training, and in the US you will usually find them as grafts or cuttings of common nursery tree species. It's caused by a fungus carried by birds, and is especially appropriate for propogation by air-layering. It's unusual to have one this low on a tree, though I have seen a few, especially on Rocky Mountain junipers. In my part of the country they show up as clusters of growth inside the canopy of a tree. The lightness of color and unusual leaf shape in the foliage may be the work of an associated virus.

I would quarantine it, study it, and take it to a local county extension agent or university when it is in full leaf.

I really love this Jeremy. Belgian and Dutch beers are so nice. Got any more photos? :-)

Teh Elm is also very nice. the Leves look quite soft. I Wish I could grab a cutting.

i think the fact that you never pruned it and it looks like a real nice bonsai is pretty cool, the new mallsai.

that also makes you wonder on its age if it is that slow growing...

good luck hopefully u discovered ur own new species.

Beer? Sure! Although with the sunny weather we're having, the Coronas and Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc are in the fridge at the moment.

Yes, the leaves ARE soft to the touch. They seem to be smaller this year than usual - maybe they'll grow a bit more - I was away on holiday (vacation) when they came out so I don't know when it happened...

Cuttings? I'm going to be trying very shortly with them. I generally have a lot of success with Elm cuttings...

I think I have some too. They like to work on this butt-ugly plum, that's sorta broom shaped, that I have had since 2000,and haven't been able to decide what to do with. It's the same old story, the tree just gets bushier, and bushier, and never gets taller than 22".It would be nice if they cut just the right branch off one night.to give me some clue as to what direction,I should take the tree.

I notice they sttay clear of the trees, that I have at least half styled.
