Trees like this with a good nebari but tall I would trunk chop. Save the top for future trees and conentrate on developing some taper and a new top on the original tree, depending on what style you prefer, after planting in ground or large pot.

I agree about reducing the heigth....about to the level of the bottom two branches perhaps? Also, the straight trunk, then abrupt change of direction in the canopy kind of bothers me. But then reduction of the top would take care of that too.

The trunk above the bottom branches has such nice movement it would be a shame to loose it. How about air layering it just below the bottom branches ? Would the resulting stump back bud ? Two for the price of one ? Very nice nebari on the future stump makes salvaging it worthwhile.

Nerifolia's back bud very well. I have chopped several with great results.

They also do well from cuttings, so I'd go for it.

Unhappy

Notthing other to than only stump it? That is the first thing I thought of as it is obvious, I really don't want to chop but am hoping some clever styling solution will present it's self.

Gday Wes!

That's quite an impressive base! For my money, that base is begging for the apex to sit over the left, rather than veering to the right as it stands now. Please see my cruddy virt to see what I mean. For this version to work, you might need to grow the tree quite a bit taller/wider to match the length of the initial trunk.

Whaddaya reckon?

Fly.

If there's a branch you can use for a new apex Fly's idea looks pretty good
