Wink *Need virtual* Planning to do a Cork Bark Elm over the rock

Hi my bonsai friends,

It's been a while since I post any message. I've been reading you guys every night though. This time I'm seeking some input.

Basically I'm planning to do an 'Over the rock' landscape with this Cork Bark Elm. My long term plan is to wrap the roots with a nice piece of rock, and then plan the whole thing in a growing box and just let it grow for 5 years+. Let me know what you think about it?

PLease kindly give me a virtual (landscape with rock) for this tree. I really appreciate your help.

P.S: The trunk is about 1.75 inches think.

L5171180:

Your image is too small and low quality to do a good virt.

It also looks like this tree has very good nebari for its size, planted as it is. So I think the roots aren't well suited to being put over a rock, but the tree might be wonderful without a rock

Perhaps if you layered part of the top and grew it in a narrow pot for a year or two, you'd havinng a good start for a "rockable" tree

If you are going to let it grow on for 5 years anyway I would chop it down and grow the new leader and develop it from there..... the picture shows what I would do....

Uploaded better files. Thanks for the reply. Cutting that much of a tree, would it kill the tree?

here is my own virtual with Villia's suggestion. How is it?
Do you think it will work with "Over the rock" style?

You are just dying to put that tree on a rock aren't you?
Cuttiing the top off the tree won't hurt either tree when done correctly and i say either tree because if do it like pootsie said you will now have two trees....me personally i like the bottom virt the best so far and look forward to more virts...

this message has been edited for obsenities typed when the author saw how small his new avatar was because of the small fiile size, but at least it's flapping...lol

Seriously, I think planting this tree on a rock would waste the wonderful potential of this tree.

This tree is long past trying to adapt it to root over rock--if it was ever suitable for that. The nebari and lower trunk are pretty much set. Neither can be changed convincingly enough to justify strapping it to a rock.

It is good enough to stand on its own as a bonsai, with a little refinement--especiaily with a moderate to drastic reduction and re-groth of branches....

As Pootsie suggests why don,t you airlayer the top for your R.O.R. I,ve started quite a few R.O.Rs this way and found that in a short space of time you can develop long but quite thick roots that remain flexible enough to bind to a rock without gaps and have the bonus of a reletively stout trunk too. Have you sourced your rock yet? this is going to be a major part of your composition and however well trained your tree will be five/ten years down the track a dull rock will be unchangeable and ruin the composition. just my thoughts, Andrew
