Name that Pine!
Hi, all -
Went to a few nurseries today, and on an old bench tucked behind one of the last buildings was a bunch of neglected, potbound, well, refuse. Found this tree on it. Looks like the bunjin tree I've been searching for. Unfortunately, no one there could identify it (or wanted to, more likely). Anyone here able to name this tree? I think it's a little pine of some measure. Not bad for $5. Any naming or styling advice gladly accepted! Scott |

Thats definately a spruce. Don't style it now, once the buds have broken and began to grow (as in your tree), wiring or repotting it may be detrimental. If you are happy with the height and girth, let the new shoots extend to about an inch, pinch the tips to encourage backbudding. They normally have one flush of growth a year, pinching will force new, compact growth before it hardens off at the onset of summer. They also like a bit of wind; stale, humid air is not so good for them.
I think that could be a Norway Spruce (Picea abies).

Thanks, guys. Picea it is. And thanks for the advice on culture, Richard. One question (fer now, anyway) - this thing is way potbound in a 3" pot. Should I upsize the pot for the summer, or leave it for now?
Thanks, Scott |

I have found that repotting spruce in the summer isn't good; I had one that turned brown and dropped most of its needles, although a year on it has started to bud again! Remember to leave some of the old soil around the roots when repotting, as with a pine. Spruce have a symbiotic fungus living in their roots which helps them obtain nutrients, so if you completely replace the soil in one sitting, you'll remove the fungus, which isn't good for the tree. In fact, most trees (conifers and broadleaved) have various symbiotes in their roots, but for spruce it is especially important. Wiring and branch cutting is best done in the autumn, but don't be too hasty to cut away. You could even let it grow for a while to thicken the trunk. Here's a pic of my Colorado Blue Spruce (P. pungens). It's budding now, like your spruce. I will eventually remove the top (it's about 15inches high at the mo), but right now I've left it on to improve the tree's vigour. No rush! Here's a link with some excellent info for you. Your weather and seasons are probably a bit different to that of the UK but you should find it useful. Cheers mate ![]() http://bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/Picea.html
