Mystery Bonsai Tree? (picture included)

Last summer I purchased a little indoor bonsai tree that was labeled Scarlet Fairy Duster. It has feathery green drooping leaves and reddish stems and trunks. Can anyone identify the species and uncover a scientific name? It has deteriorated somewhat over the winter months, losing some leaves. I am still wondering about placement, watering, feeding, soil and repotting.

Albizia julibrissin. Or mimosa or silk tree. They grow like weeds down here in fl. I'm pretty sure they like full sun and don't overwater it. If it's a mimosa you can chop the tree down below the leaves and it'll grow back rather quickly. I think to that the mimosa that closes up is sunshine mimosa, here it's just ground cover

OK Guys...

Difficult to tell, however, this looks like a Fairy Duster.

There are two Fairy Dusters in the same family as Acacia (Mimosa) -Fabaceae (Leguminosae).

The Baja Fairy Duster, CALLIANDRA californica, occurs mostly in Mexico, and is quite similar to the C. eirophylla.

The Fairy Duster, False Mesquite, CALLIANDRA eirophylla, occurs from Southern California, across Arizona and New Mexico, into Texas. The C. californica foliage is more luxuriant, and blooms longer than the C. eirophylla.

Both do well in Sunset Zones 10-24.

Water...if the dries out completely, water YESTERDAY.

In the ground, they need full sun. However, in containers, when young, as yours are, they need partial shade at least, when weather is hot...as in 80F. Protect from winter and spring freezes.

Both are OUTDOOR plants.

Hope this helps...

Pat
