Big Smile My uncle's ficus from the far east

Apparently, I recently discovered that my uncle is also a bonsai fan. This is one of his ficus.

He has quite a few of these big ficus. This is one of his big one which he is willing to give it to me if I find a way to get permission through U.S. Customs.

If anyone kind enough to share some information to me on how to get the permit to ship the through through U.S. Custom, pleae reply. Thanks all !!

Yes, the person in the picture is ME and I am a little shy. :-) Have fun.

Most big bonsai nursery's will import for you. It will cost a lot and will probably have to stay in quarentine for 2 years.

The US import rules often depend (a lot) on the specific country you're importing from.

Regards,

Matt

I'm importing from Hong Kong, China.
Can you send me a telephone number I can call and arrange cargo for this kind of tree transportation?

This is such a lovely ficus I don't want to miss. :-)

I was referring to importing from all of Asia where the dread Asian longhorned beetle is a serious threat. The last time I checked, the quarentine was 2 years in a very tight greenhouse.
What I've never understood is that one can import to Europe from Asia directly without a quarentine. I've asked this on a few forums but never had a reply.

Hi all, as far as i understand, in the U.K. the quaranteen takes place prior to export from the country of origin for two years for most species, this is done in registered nurseries. only certain species have to stay in quarenteen on arrival but this is usually only for a matter of a couple of months pending inspection from DEFRA. this pdf explains.....http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/r...ealth/phi-9.pdf

Hmmm...

There could be a couple things at work:

1) Maybe Europe doesn't have a multibillion dollar citrus agrobusiness that together with the forestry industry pays lobbyists millions to influence policies with respect to influence import/export issues...

2) or, it might also be a climate issue. Maybe the countries in Europe that are most affected have temperate zones that present barriers to naturalization (like a harsh winter or something). The US is pretty big and it seems possible that pests could migrate and overwinter in another part of the country or state.

Regards,

Matt
