I thought I would update this thread.

I was torn between the two different designs offered up by Mindcrime and Si. I decided to wire up the lowest branch into a secondary trunk, and stew on the image for a while. I didn't remove the second branch on the right, because I felt it was too important for the other design option. I did the wiring in early April.

In early June, I had a discussion about this tree with several other bonsai enthusiasts who had the benefit of seeing the tree in person. The consensus was to lose the second trunk, so...

The last pic was taken this morning. The tree has been partially dewired and is being allowed to rest/grow, hence the somewhat unkept appearance to the foliage. Next spring, I'll hopefully place it into a shallow, round, rustic pot.

I like where this tree seems to be going. I agree about the rest period but; and I am assuming this is a Hinoki Cypress from the pictures, it is important that you continually pinch the extending growth at the ends of the branches. This tree does not back bud well, if at all, and if not pinched will escape any attempts at design rather quickly and irrevocably. Hinokis take constant attention. This is one of the reasons you do not see too many of these trees coming out of Japan, they take too much work to maintain.

Still Dave,

I should want to lower the top of the tree somewhat and shorten all branches.
Furthermore I would shorten this big jin on the right.

I "painted" it up in this virtual.

Hope its possible (I don't know much about Hinoki) and that you like my thoughts.

Wessel

Thanks for the post Vance. This is my first Hinoki. I've heard about the problems with its maintenence...constant pinching to maintain tight foliage, not pinching after mid summer so as not to weaken the tree, etc. I'm trying to come up with a way to maintain the shape of the tree, as well as its health. Luckily, the tree seems to have a fair amount of actively growing foliage near to the trunk. I'm only going to aggressively pinch back if the tree really starts to lose its shape...it has been sulking after some serious foliage reduction this spring but seems to be coming around over the last few weeks.

Thanks again,

Dave

Wessel, I like that design as well. It really tightens things up. Thanks for the effort. I won't be making any more changes until next year. I want to see how the tree looks after its in the new pot and the foliage is wired out. If I don't like what I've done, then your design may be the one. We shall see.

Hey Wessel,
It looks like we had the same idea, you just finished yours first!
Regards,
Zach

I Like the Tree that YOU designed

So many people are citing a rule for bunjin, saying "there's too much foliage on your tree!" Removing foliage to make a bunjin is like cutting a tree to 8" just to make it a shohin, regardless of design.

What you displayed in your first post was a freshly wired Hinoki Cypress with plates of foliage oblique to the camera, having not yet oriented themselves to the sun. Even with that there was nothing wrong with the amount of foliage in the first pic.

Because your composition was sound-- balance, taper, use of negative space, asymmetry and not entirely cookie cutter-- I would say that you could have called it a bunjin in the making. The tree made sense to me. Wiring a second trunk under a large branch certainly did not make sense. I concede that the design was better suited for a juniper than a Hinoki Cypress (plate-like foliage and difficulty keeping it in trim), but we work with what we have.

Unfortunately, it now looks like a tree designed by committee. Reading these posts, I do not wonder why.

Kind regards,
Jim
