DAV4,

I like the tree very much and it will get only better as you refine the foliage. I would be inclined to extend the shari just a bit higher and through the curve. With the shari ending where it does, it gives the impression of fatness at the curve. A little carving would make that go away.

Ancient, I've been chewing on that one since last year. The shari does create a small amount of reverse taper just below the bend. I will either do as you suggest, extending the existing shari up into the bend, or I might create a smaller shari on the outside of the bend where some jins already exist, carving down that little bulge, and extend this new element up into the upper trunk. Havn't decided which way to go yet. Thanks,

Dave

Hi everyone, I like this tree Dave. I kinda like Mindcrime's sketch for it too. Like some people have said, it is too heavy on top for a successful bunjin. I think it would be very difficult to do this Hinoki as a bunjin mainly because the branch structure , (unless you want to go wild and put a lot of curves on those branches and reduce the foliage by a lot). I think it could be a pretty good informal upright with a double apex though. I would bring the first branch up to a small apex to fill in the void in the middle of the tree. Here's a sketch of how I see it. Good luck with it!

Si

ps. I think you have enough branches for the top apex already. So I would wire the top branches down (and to the front) to finish the apex, and in the process, reduce the height of the tree by a few inches too.

Si, thankyou for your input. You always have a wonderful insight into design and structure...I'm definately considering your design.Malik, I used straight bonsai soil, mostly turface and grit with a little bark thrown in.

For what little it may be worth, I like Si's drawing the best of all the proposals.

I had thought this thread might have taken a different direction.I have a juniper,a euonymous, and a sand cherry cultivar, that I rescued from the garbage at the garden center,at one of those "big box" chain stores,we all know and hate. These stores get in so many plants, that they can't possibly take care of them all,and a sizeable chunk of these end up in the trash compactor. And not even because they die.More often,it's simply because the regional ogffice has ordered more plants for each store than they can sell. They have a shipment coming in that they no longer have room for,so the existing stock gets tossed out.It matters not if this stock is prepackaged cupcakes,or flowering shrubs. The Wal-Mart model of retailing may be defended by the right wing in this country, but it is a scourge on society, and the planet.

WADR, what different direction did you have in mind? This is a bonsai forum; the discussion of the poster's "trash tree" lightly touched on the origins of the specimen, then--quite rightly in my view--focused on the tree as bonsai and its development as same.

Whether or not "we all know and hate" the "big box chain stores" seems to me a point largely unrelated to bonsai, as well as one clearly debatable. (f we all hate them, how then do they come to thrive?)

There seems to me to be no shortage of strife, even sometimes within the friendly domain of this forum! Thus I'm always happy to read about positive events, such as the splendid salvation of this tree, and the friendly, creative suggestions made about its cultivation. And that's why I'm also happy to leave the war against Wal-Mart for another time, another place.

Cordially,

Lucas Cato
