Don´t agree here Wes, look at this article:

Quote:

Chamaecyparis obtusa--Hinoki Cypress

Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8
Height: 65 ft Spread: 15 ft Form: pyramidal
Type: narrow-leaved evergreen tree
Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches

Comments: In landscape situations, the tree is usually
seen in the form of one of its many cultivars. It has a
moderate growth rate and does not tolerate air pollution.
Hinoki Cypress prefers cool, moist soil and tolerates
partial shade, although it prefers a sunny location. Sun
scorch can be a problem on cultivars with colored foliage.

Really nice piece of materal, Dave

Me thinks, too much foliage for a bunjin...much to little for an informal upright.

What a find !
This is a very nice "informal bunjin".

Again, thanks for all the comments. My goal with this Bunjin is to further reduce and refine the foliage, but I can only go so fast, and I feel like I'm pushing the envelope already, so to speak. This tree was a fully foliaged 4 foot tall shrub less then 12 months ago. The foliage completely obscured the trunk, and it looked so nice, I nearly planted it in my yard as a specimen. In the initial styling last spring, I removed over 90% of the foliage, and I removed another 50% yesterday. I'm reluctant to remove more right now. We'll see how it grows this year, and I'll study the branching with future reductions in mind.

Dave

PS anttal63's image is basically where I want to go; thanks for the virt

Definitely a good result!

I think I'd prefer it with the top off but that's just me.

Here are a few more shots of the tree from different angles. I feel comfortable with my choice of front, but I think the tree looks good from other angles as well. Thanks again,

Dave
