my OLD ugly San Jose' junipers
Ok, don't laugh........ I have been playing with bonsai for 35 years. I started this first old san jose' nearly 30 years ago from a cutting. It has gone through several "reversals of fortune" over the years. I apologize for not giving it a trim before the photograph but I have been meaning to post it for ages and just recently had some free time so I just grabbed the camera and shot.
This will never be a great bonsai but it is a sentimental favorite just the same. It is over potted as the last repot was done before I had the drip system. I overpotted to protect against drying out too fast in our brutal summers. Next repot I am looking for a smaller pot to put it in. It is larger than it looks in the photo...probably about 16 to 18 inches tall. susieq Last edited by susieq : 27-Jun-2007 at 10:28 PM. |

Great trunk! Once the foliage is thinned/trimmed to be more in scale with the trunk caliper and it's repotted I think it will look awesome!

San Jose' #2
This tree is a 25+ year old cutting off of the "ugly old" San Jose' in the previous post. It started out as a twin trunk but the two trunks were not flowing together...but more opposite each other, not pleasing to the eye at all, so a few years ago I removed the second trunk. It is a little bit nicer tree than the old one. Again, not a great tree but sentimental to me.

San Jose' #3
This tree is one that I bought from a local man who lived in Spring Hill, just up the highway from here. He used to grow nursery stock for the bonsai trade. He was an older gent and a few years ago had to quit due to health problems so he had a big clearance sale.
I must have purchased close to twenty 3 gallon sized San Jose' from him for $5. bucks each. They had decent caliper trunk but needed a lot of training. I have had this one about 4 Years now. Had to wire the trunk up as they tend to grow up a short distance and then make a 90 degree curve. This one included. many of them would have made nice cascades for that reason too. I am guessing that these trees were probably 10 years old or older when I bought them. They don't look like much before they get to be 10. This one is also over potted but now that the drip system is set up, it will be repotted to a smaller pot next spring. I might chop the top to bring up a new leader and try to get more taper higher up on top....maybe I have half a dozen more of the trees I bought from this man but have sold or given away most of them. I love them but am moving more towards the malpigghias, barbados cherry and singapore holly. Next time they are in full bloom, I will grab the camera again.....if I have time. susieq Last edited by susieq : 27-Jun-2007 at 11:32 PM. Reason: forgot a detail |

re thinning...
Thank you.
BonsaiRic The OLD san jose has had a lot of refining done on the lowest branch especially....but right now it needs a hair cut badly and the innner structure of the tree is not visible...again, sorry for that. The lowest branch is like a "claw" with the curled fingers supporting the foliage on it's finger tips. The other higher branches aren't there yet...but I am working on it. I will try to post a better pic after a trim Here is a close up of the inner part of the tree... susieq Last edited by susieq : 27-Jun-2007 at 11:54 PM. Reason: adding photo |

G'day Susieq...
Nice trees...all three...! IF they were mine, I would have significantly LESS foliage on all three... But, alas, they aren't mine. Pat
