My new Chinese Elm. A gift from Si~.
I spent about 4 hours at Si~ 's home yesterday. Thanks Si~, I learned a lot from you. I would say Si~ is an expert in Elm. At his yard, I could see lot of Elm in various stages. He is kind enough to make me one excellent elm from the original one sat on the tiny plastic pot. He let this elm in the tiny pot for a while already and its root escaped from the pot and invaded down to the soil in Californian juniper's container (he let the elm pot sit in the California juniper's container
)As you can see in the first pict. , the tree is about 1 m height!. If I had this elm, I would cut of the roots went through the drainage holes (these root parts are about 35 cm length). But Si~ managed to get whole root. He didn't want to cut the root off because he want to use them for root exposed style. He used lot of wire to keep the root and the tree stay in place. After 2 hours, you can see the final tree. Wow. Thanks for a gift Si~. Bonhe |

This is interesting. Did Si mention how many of the fine roots will die off over time from air exposure? Please be sure to post more pictures over time. It would be neat to see the recovery. What a gift!

Hi John, I know I'm very lucky to have Si~ as a friend who lives closed to my place.
Hi Barbara, fine roots will die from air exposure. The tree's roots was not covered yet at the time picture taken. As soon as I got home, I used pumice to cover them up. I would post more picture few months later. Bonhe |

It passed recovery phase. 2 branches on the top still don't show the life yet. The picture was taken last week. Next year, it will be disclosed gradually.

Hey! I just found this thread! Bonhe, why don't you try to download the Irfanview software provided here (posted somewhere on BT) so you can upload nicer pictures. Either that or get some photo editing software like Photoshop. Or email me the full- size pictures and I can upload for you.
Anyway, I found some earlier pictures of this little elm tree, uploaded now so you all can see it a little better. Too bad the apex did not make it. But that's ok, the little tree has plenty of curves to work with. You will need to bring a new branch up and redo the apex later. The apex should be over to the left side because of the movement at the root base. It has a pretty good exposed-root style, which gave it a lot more height and interesting features for such a small and boring tree. Water and feed it a bit more. It should be much fuller by now. Good luck with it Bonhe! Si |

Hi Si,
I downloaded Irfanview software. That's why you can see my pictures in other posts are better. At first, my digital camera was malfunctionized, now I have to use my nikon F3 and Leica M6. I think I willl stick with film camera for now. Bonhe |
