My Little Garden

well here are 9 pictures from a Bonsai garden I am trying to start. They are all found trees and I planted them the other day. If anyone could give any tips suggestions I would appreciate it very much. I have been lurking here for a while and decided I needed to post pics

shot of the entire garden

I think this a birch

I think another birch

not sure what this is

I dont know what to do here...graft??

I appreciate any comments/suggestions. I am also not sure on the type of all of these trees.

Hello Goodspeed,

Nice little growing bed you have there. Obviously the trees need to spend a good few years there before they are ready for bonsai training.

just to save Matt the bother of having to say it again, there is no need to host your images elsewhere. You can upload them directly into your posts, 1 per post. Just resize them to bee no greater than 640 px on the longest side and use the feature shown below.

Regards,

Chris.

Good start on the growing bed! What is the species of tree with the trunk chop?

Thanks for the tutorial and graphic, Treebeard.

Goodspeed, nice garden and a fine house you have there. Concerning the images, another point is, those images are huge file sizes. Like 120K each, so it's a 1MB download for people on dialup - that's like 3 minutes. You can compress them at a lower JPG quality and save a ton of space and bandwidth for yourself, amd time for the viewers.

Something to keep in mind if you want to host your own..

One question. I am im NH(cold winters), will I have to take these trees inside for the winter even though they are an indigenous_species?

Goodspeed,
As for taking them inside... I think you would do these trees more harm then good by digging them up from the ground. Plus if these trees are all indigenous species and you live in NH they will all need a cold rest period in the winter. On thing I would do if they were mine is to cover the base of the tree with mulch to help prevent a freeze thaw cycle and if they are in an area where there is a bunch of wind you may want to try to protect from strong winds.

Hope this helps
Adam

Nope, just some wind protection if it blows hard and cold. That tree you can't ID is a maple, the one that is everywhere around new england. Its name; I dunno. Keep an eye on it though, it could be 15 feet tall in september.
The base of the birch group is pretty nice, do I see a rock in there?
