My first two junipers....

ok i am posting these because i said i would. I have air brushed the backgroud blue to try and make it look more even but the trees have ben left as they are. they were my first attempts at juniper from nursery stock a few years ago now and have been more or less neglected ever since.

So...no laughing at the over size and bad selection of pots.

No laughing at the fact that the pads are not pinched an neat. (its not the growing season here either you know) No lauging at the fact there is no taper in the trunck and no laughing at the weeds...well ok you can laugh at the weeds.

Lesson number one - A rock does not make up for lack of taper.....

Jules,
The tree's will only get better if you treat them like you do your best tree's. As for the pots I like them.

Your Friend,
Adam

Re: My first two junipers....

Jules,
I think they're ok. Ofcourse, there's almost no taper, but they do have lots of movement. But, where is the coke can ??

If you like shohin, you may try finding a nursery tree such as these were, that has many live low branches. Then you can cut the trunk 3" above the last branch you want to use.
After a while (to let it recover) you can make the stump into a tapering jin.

Re: My first two junipers....

I like the trees and the pots! The first tree reminds me of some of the pines that grow around here.

Re: My first two junipers....

Hi Jules, Lesson no. 1. One gallon stock will only make a plant 5" high. Lesson no. 2. You have broken lesson no. 1. You have some plants that have some real potential. I could not get a real sense out of plant no. 1, and would probably not do anything more with it till it grows out some. Now, plant no.2 is pretty good as far as one gallon material goes. I think you can see by my virtual where I pruned out the top at the natural apex for the tree. Of course this is just my opinion. If you just take your finger and block out the top two branches you will see what I mean. One thing you can do is get yourself 2 or 3 or 5 more of these junipers and think about a rustic windswept type forest planting. This is what I am going to do next spring. I showed the pic of my juniper collection that has been accumulating in my backyard. This is mostly one gallon stock. The name of the post is "five for the future" and it is in the general thread I think. Probably a page or two back. Enjoy, Bonsaial
