Thumbs down my first tree

Hi everyone,
I got interested in bosai a couple weeks ago. I read some books and decided that I wanted to get a cheap project so I can get used to basic care before I started on a real project.

So I went to the garden center and trees were 75% off for the fall clearance, so I picked up a globe yew (taxus "brownii") for 1$. This tree was very bushy. I started cutting and it felt so good that I ended up butchering it. Is there any hope on styling this?

The trunk is a thick as I want it seeing how this is just a learning experience. I would like to start root pruning a get it in a slightly smaller pot within the next season or two. I chopped the top as low as I could, but still leaving foilage, and then a read a post last night that new branches won't grow lower by the trunk. Is this true?
any suggestions?

*Yikes*, you sure did butcher this little guy.
Your best off just letting in grow, for a few years, and recover from your last attack.
BTW Bonzai is what you say when you jump out of a plane,
and bonsai is the art with trees.

*Can anyone say sling shot?!?

Hi Johnson,

~LOL~....I've been studying bonsai for a long time and I still do this when I try to style a tree in one sit down. ...it just feels good to lop those branches sometimes, and the next cut is ALWAYS going to make it better .Welcome to the sometimes creative sometimes destructive, sometimes exhilirating sometimes frustrating,....but almost always fun and educational world of bonsai.

Thumbs up

I like it lol...Don't worry about it Johnson...Just go out and buy a load of trees and keep practising...

If you smile you'll get a happy tree...Stress out and you get a stressed out looking tree...

Just have fun and listen to what the tree wants you to do with it...

Happy Growing
Tai

ya I'll be sure to post a pic before I start on the next one. Another question: The garden center also had some large japanese laceleaf maple for 85$. Is that The normal price of a large tree in the U.S?
