My First Bonsai - Chinese Juniper

Hi all

This is my first post, and i have recently bought my first bonsai. I was wondering if you all could comment on what i should be concentrating on intially before i build up my knowledge to make major styling decisions.

Also this was bought as an outdoor bonsai - excuse my ignorance, but can it be kept indoors in the winter ? or should it be kept outdoors all year ?

Thanks

Hi Silver,

I think the view from the opposite side (The photo in your Gallery) is better, but you can improve this side by thinning the foliage where the first branch comes off the trunk.

It should be shaped so that you can see some of the underlying structure and not so much like a poodle's body. Cleaning away any foliage (you can keep the branches for now) that grow within a couple inches of the crook where that first branch comes off the trunk would be a good first step. Then you can repost and we'll see what we have.

Junipers should be kept outdoors for best results. Some people are able to grow them indoors in a greenhouse environment (with a lot of extra lighting and humidity and things like that).

I pulled up an informal upright juniper from the gallery that you can use as an aid to help understand how to separate the branches from the trunk a little more.

Matt

I was able to keep a juniper alive indoors for a year with propor lighting humidity etc. It eventually died, so I don't reccomend that you try it.

good job. just a reminder, if you cut foliage on a juniper it will turn brown near the cut so you must pinch foliage with your fingers to trim it or use tweezers.
