My Ficus Retusa

Hello all,

I would be glad to have some advice and/or your opinion(s) on my bonsai. Many thanks in advance. It is not my first bonsai but I am a newbie!

This forum is great, very interesting, by far the best out there.

Regards,

James,

Welcome to the forum. That looks like a healthy ficus, was it a Christmas present this year? It would appear to be a Golden Gate or better known as Tiger Bark ficus (Ficus Microcarpa Retusa) based on what I can see of the bark and leaves.

You may want to browse through the gallery here and see some other figs, maybe get an idea of the direction you would like to go as far as styling.

You may want to start shaping the fig, defining the branches, building ramification and starting to round off the canopy or canopies.

I have a little experience with figs and have had some small success with growing them and would be happy to answer any questions that I can. However, you have picked the right forum as there are many experienced bonsaist here that are willing to help and answer questions.

Jerry Meislik is a member here and is an expert in ficus, he has also wrote "the book" on ficus and it's use as bonsai.

Good Luck,

Will

Will,

Thank you very much for your kind and prompt answer, I have only recently discovered this forum and I am hooked like anything, girlfriend going nuts!
This bonsai was a Christmas gift (I know u guys get a lot of this at this time of year), but it was chosen by me. I chose a Ficus because it is strong and can be grown indoors. I love this tree and don't want to harm it!
I sure will surf the forum a bit more and make up my mind to which direction I want to take.

Thanks again Will,

James

Ficusa retusa 'nitidia' would be the name.

Are you guessing as to the exact species of Ficus here Ron or commenting on my guess or are you, as usual, just trying to interrupt yet another thread?

James, Here is one of my figs.

Nope, just using the name that Jim Smith of Vero Beach taught me. And like you I was just trying to give the poster the correct name.
You read too much into everything.

Thanks for noticing James, yes wiring can be tedious but I do enjoy it and I feel that I am actually becoming rather good at it, after all I've had some practice, lol.

This Golden Gate of mine grows real quick and is always in need of something. You can see what five months of training can do for a fig here.

Again, good luck James, keep us posted!

Actually Ron, I used the words.."It would appear to be..." since as I said, "based on what I could see of the bark and leaves." So you are giving an exact identification here Ron? Are you saying that this is not a Ficus Retusa Microcarpa? Please be specific.

I base my words on direct experience and on words of people much wiser than I. (A real good link for you James.)

The real question is if you actually have something helpful to add to the discussion at hand or if you are just disrupting yet another thread? The only thing you are harming here is James and his first impression of the forum.

Oh and thanks for the compliment,

Will
