my Ficus b.
13 years from a cutting. I havn't worked on this tree for about 1.5 years, so its looking a little scraggly.
(i must say i am a bit embarassed showing this here, but it needs serious help, and this is a serious bunch!) The tree is self supporting and not on the edge of the pot. It has a bad case of tap water scale around the pot and on the trunk. Any style ideas and scale removal ideas would be great. ( I have been following the thread about this). sorry about the flash shadow. ![]() ****edit*** another front shot, shows the branch structure a bit better. I always hesitate to post tree shaping ideas because usually there are others on line that have much more creative ideas than me. But the main thing I would do is cut it off sort of like the new pic...cut right above an exisiting leaf...and then give it alot more sun. It looks to me like it's getting real stringy and with my ficus that is usually a lack of sun.
Again, I will gladly stand corrected, but severe water crusting like that is usually caused by lack of good drainage. I would repot it immediately and get rid of all the old soil and put the tree in a good bonsai mix. I have some stuff called A-MAZ Water Spot Remover that we use alot because of our hard water. It comes from a local glass shop. I'm sure there are many brands. While the tree is out of the pot, you could take something like this and some fine steel wool and clean the pot up like new. It will take some elbow grease! |

I think i have to agree, this tree needs a regrow badly. and you are right about the lack of light. My current apartment is severly lacking in light, but thankfully, the ficus will live in these conditions without dying.
in my new apartment, it will get lots of light, so i will have to wait till then to do the chop. I thnk i will wait till i get to the new place to do teh repot as well as i want to make sure it is strong to do this. Any ideas on what to do with those ugly bulbous roots? |
