my bonsai in training

alright, well the first two pictures im going to show you are two serperate cuttings from a japanese maple, the third picture is of some maple i found in my yard, and the last picture is of my elm (the one that had the dead upper half) planted into the ground with the upper half cut off.

for the first two cuttings, i took off the first layer of bark until there was a green damp sticky layer, and then i covered that portion with hormone powder, and then i planted them into the ground. my question is, how long should these cuttings take to sprout some roots?

sounds to me like you didnt get all the cambium off the cuttings, you should cut all the way down to the wood.
Without protection i highly dont those cuttings will root before they die. I have had very bad luck rooting j. maple from cuttings. They need very good care. Also yours look too big imo.

It is not likely that your cuttings will root in the ground. Cutting propegation is usually done in a greenhouse or other more controlled environment.

If you want to learn more about bonsai from a great teacher, you should head over to Yasukunai bonsai on Dempster and sign up for classes. Tell Ivan that Bob from California sent you over.

Make sure you plan on attending the big show in august at the Botanic Garden. I'll be there for sure.

alright well i guess ill just keep one of the cuttings in the ground, and take out the rest, just to see if something does root, and then ill just do more research on cuttings.
