Mugo pine - literati
This is a European Mountain Pine, Pinus mugo. It is 60 cm high, about 150 years old, pot by Peter Krebs. It was collected in the German Alps in 1984. Styled by myself since 1988.

Re: Mugo pine - literati
Walter, great tree, I think I've seen this one before. But, for some reason looking at it at this moment, it strikes me as being off balance. like it is set to topple to the right.
The foliage mass and the lean don't appear to consistent. What is your "story" for this tree? I have an idea; I'm wondering if I'm interpreting it correctly. Jim Stone

Re: Mugo pine - literati
Jim,
I make it a point not to overbalance my trees. I believe that what is called dynamic balance gives the trees more character. Dynamic balance means that one part may well be out of balance but it is weighed by something else being out of balance. Hard to descrobe in words. See this picture: The tree itself may be out of balance. But this is only a part of the overall design. It includes an empty area which is large enough to catch the unbalanced tree. The whole composition should be balanced again, but convey a very strong dynamich impression. Walter |

Re: Mugo pine - literati
Yes, in both cases, I take it the first photo, with painting, is form the pre-Munich collaboration?
I think what I needed was more linearity to offset the motion of the trunk. This balance was provided by the open length of the painting and even the postiion on the stand. The former shows that it does not take much to resolve the composition... The original still imparts that feeling to me- that center positioning on a roundish slab imparts an unresolved dynamic tension. Thank you for the exercise Walter! Jim Stone
